Goldy Gopher Advisor Information

Academic Advisor

Students admitted to our program are assigned an academic advisor to help with the planning of their academic program. The academic advisor has no financial commitment to the students they are advising.

Research Advisor

Selection of a research adviser is the students responsibility. The research adviser will help plan the students degree program, sign the necessary forms for the students degree, and will serve as the students advocate in the department. Identifying a research advisor early in the students graduate career is essential. A students academic advisor, by mutual consent, can become the students research advisor. For doctoral students the research advisor will serve as a guide for the students PhD dissertation research.

Students who are uncertain who they would like as their research advisor, should schedule time to meet with faculty in their interest area. Students might also develop an interest in working with a faculty member after taking a class from a professor. The department faculty directory on the ECE website is a good resource for information about faculty's research interests along with their email address and telephone numbers.

Students who have changed advisors should email Linda Jagerson so that she can contact the Graduate School to update their graduate school record/transcript. The following information should be included when emailing: complete name, U of M identification number, current advisor's name, and new advisor's name.
